To maximise the usable space in the loft we decided to insulate in the pitch or slope of the roof. We also decided it would be much easier to do this if we removed the roof plus it would also enable us to make the roof wind tight by taping down the breather membrane. Having chosen the Viridian roof integrated solar thermal panels it was another reason to take the roof off.
With the scaffolding in place the first step was to remove our solar PV panels and set them aside where they wouldn’t get damaged.
And then the professionals arrived …
It didn’t take long to have the roof stripped back to the timbers.
Although we new it to be the case it was still shocking to see the lack of any insulation above the stairwell. This is the highest point in the house so the hot air would rise up and escape through the roof.
We will be removing the cold water tank from the loft as we will be connecting the taps and thermal store (hot water cylinder) directly to the mains water supply.
The dormer is going to be a challenge to make it thermally efficient and avoid cold bridges.
